Kinda sad to think about, the internet as we know it is sorta on life support. We’re like steps away from blending our personal life with our work life. Shit’s terrifying
I’m probably just talking consequences of enshitification. But it’s so wild that it’ll get worse
I can’t imagine being the person who does the thankless work of keeping this place running
Its the only socially beneficial work I do. My day job is typical capitalist bs
to all who keep this platform going strong
This is why I keep wanting to get into Mesh Networks - I know there are data hoarders out there safeguarding all the piles of knowledge, and I super want to be a part of making that accessible to my community.
I am looking at getting a LoRa board to try meshtastic, the range looks good but i don’t know about the bandwidth.
Check out this study turns out meshtastic is based:
If the Internet dies so does the closest thing I’ve ever had to a real social life but enshittification is already ruining that so whatever
We’re like steps away from blending our personal life with our work life
Hasn’t that been the case for like at least 5 years now?
But it’s so wild that it’ll get worse
We are currently hurtling towards collapse and a major restructiring of global power and well as ecological destruction. I think the internet will be the least of our worries as it probably will physically struggle to even function in a decade for multple reasons
I think the internet will be the least of our worries
totally agree, and still sad about it - I will miss having humanity’s knowledge at my fingertips
I wonder how feasible it would be to backup the internet archive onto a laptop to keep for after the collapse. I know all of wikipedia (text only no images) is only like 40 gb.
Edit: from the about page for internet archive:
A single copy of the Internet Archive library collection occupies 145+ Petabytes of server space
Guess we arent saving much of that :/
the year is 2050, currently spelunking into old cities looking for hard drives with PDFs of pre-collapse human knowledge on them. Haven’t found an unencrypted drive that would start in over a month.

This principle is one I think people in my industry don’t understand lol
That’s actually a super great perspective that shows how fucking privileged I am. I know a lot of leftists talk about the effects of economic collapse the way economists try to predict economic collapses ya ya but it’s going to be one of those things that hits suddenly and hits hard.
Though it is very possible it’s held off in my lifetime and we continue to maintain the boom bust cycle with far fewer booms. Also, I think there are going to be industries designed to keep the internet on life support. It’s almost completely invaluable at this point considering how the world is so connected
We are currently hurtling towards collapse and a major restructiring of global power and well as ecological destruction.
I know its shitty and naive, but I cant help but feel a little bit excited by this prospect.
Ive never felt so insulted in my life
Proves there is an emoji for everything on this site
I pray for the day the internet is destroyed
Some of my friends I never see anymore are basically “me but posts on another number of sites/apps”
Honestly, I think no burnham was on to something with the whole inside thing. He’s kinda been hitting the nail on the head since
People have been dooming about the end of the internet for 35 years, saying it’s equally on life support. This isn’t the end.
So then that sounds like it’s getting worse and we have a way to track “worseness” I think by more and more stuff being paywalled
My point is not that it’s actually been dying, it’s that people have always complained that it’s been at an equivalent state of “verge of death” since before it even existed. There were fed weirdoes who thought the merger of ARPANET with NSFNET would destroy both. The internet is in a constant state of change, you could argue that the internet is change. Change often feels like the end of something you use and love.
There will always be niches and there will always be massive platforms trying to edge in on those things. That’s literally just how capitalism works. The symptom is not the disease, you have to treat the source of the problem.
That actually super tracks. I hang out with niche groups of people and occupy nice spots online lol until further notice I guess
