A. Collier, Astrophysics Ph.D. talks about the current culture surrounding postdoctoral positions. And how unsustainable they are. I love her channel 😁

This morning I was just wondering how the 'rona affected everyone in Academia. I’d love to hear people anecedotes about their department or institution before and during the pandemic.

    I’m a participant in this exodus 😅

The equivalent financial analysis in the Netherlands is not nearly as extreme as what she quotes for the US, where earning double the postdoc salary appears to be a realistic expectation. Here, jumping going from a PhD into industry gives you closer to a 10% - 20% pay rise relative to jumping into a PostDoc, at least for science researchers.

So, a PostDoc might be more a more attractive choice here than in the US. But I personally want to see what research is like outside of academia, the modest pay rise and stability are attractive, and the research projects seem comparably interesting. Ask me in a few years how it goes…

Also, thanks for bringing this channel to my attention. I have watched a few of her videos since yesterday, and I like her presentation style and choice of topics.
