  • I think EndeavourOS (or anything based on Arch Linux) isn’t a great distro to start with for a beginner, experienced users like to pretend that it’s totally easy but it’s really not, it generally relies more on the terminal and manual configuration than other easier distros

I agree with that other comment in this thread saying that a different distro would be a lot easier to learn, and I also agree with them about Fedora Kinoite being easy to understand as a new user (the distro I use is a variant of it), though I also understand that a lot of people here aren’t fond of Fedora due to their connection to Red Hat, and Fedora’s Atomic variants like that have some quirks that make them different from most other distros

I also agree that XFCE isn’t a great choice of desktop environment, a big part of it being “lightweight” is because it lacks a lot of useful features that other DEs have, and if your PC can handle current Windows then you most likely will be fine with “heavier” DEs like KDE Plasma or GNOME, they still generally run better than Windows these days

I’d recommend trying KDE Plasma (Fedora Kinoite comes with it, but you can get it on most other distros too), it’s very flexible but still pretty easy to use, its UI scaling works better than in any other DE I’ve seen, and it also has color blindness filters if that’s what you mean by color filter (and if you mean blue light filter, it has that too)

  • Taking a quick look at the video (everything except actually watching it), the idea seems fine, CoD WWII really isn’t a very good campaign and it seems like a fair comparison to make

Like, it’s not like WaW isn’t heroic, but it does focus more on the horrors of war than most other CoD games, and is a pretty big contrast from WWII which barely focuses on that at all and is full of goofy over-the-top action setpieces

I’d need to watch it to know (so I could be wrong), but it probably isn’t about Soviets vs Americans either since WaW’s American campaign isn’t much different in tone from its Soviet campaign

I don’t think World at War’s some masterpiece like it’s often made out to be, but it at least feels like it’s got relatively a consistent tone

  • The literal only argument here is just “I don’t have to use a bunch of Google tabs anymore because ChatGPT can lie to me all in one place!!” lmao

Like, the only way this works is if ChatGPT is literally always correct at all times (which will never be the case fundamentally), because otherwise it’s even worse than the existing process of just using Google because it’s just another step before you end up needing to do that anyway

This isn’t even one of those “oh in the made-up future where ChatGPT is magically perfect, this will be useful, therefore we should support AI-bros right now so we can get there” types of things, this is just assuming that ChatGPT in its current form is somehow a good research tool which is just about the opposite of the case

  • God, passive language in news articles mentioning cops is so beyond parody at this point that I can’t even tell what headlines mean anymore

    cw: animal death

Headline: “Dogs attack woman, police discharge service weapon”

The officer discharged their service weapon striking the animals. The dogs died on scene.

I actually had to look at the article and read that sentence to even tell what they meant by that headline, I was seriously wondering if they just fired in the air or something, I would never use “police discharge service weapon” to refer to cops fatally shooting something lmao

  • We’re literally Canadian and yet my brother was just in here trying to sing the praises of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to me, I was trying really hard to not tell him to fuck right off

The fact that he’s expecting me to be happy about people who are pro-genocide because of some token “progressive” promises (that probably won’t even mean anything once elected) is infuriating, especially when those promises don’t even affect us in particular

  • Oh I don’t have a front basket on mine actually, I’m just dangling my helmet off the handlebar in that photo (unless you meant to reply to someone else like OP)

But I know you can get aftermarket front baskets/racks, just be careful if you get a mountain bike or something because not every front rack works with bikes that have front suspension (since the lower part of the fork moves up and down on those)

Personally I prefer a rear rack with a detachable pannier bag, my bike came with the rack (since that’s where the battery goes in on this one) and I got the bag cheap enough on Amazon, I can wear it over my shoulder when I get where I’m going and then just clip it back on the bike when I leave, you could also attach a basket or milk crate or whatever, which I gotta start doing eventually so I can carry more groceries

It also came with the fenders too, though of course those can also be bought aftermarket for bikes that don’t have them

Only other thing I wish it came with was lights, a lot of ebikes are capable of having their lights be directly powered by the motor’s battery so you don’t need to charge them separately, I’m using USB-charged ones for now which I gotta worry about separately

  • I love ebikes!!

Here’s mine!! It normally isn’t glowing, but I had the LED tape on it for a group ride a few months ago and I still love how it looked then, it cycled through trans flag colors and everything 😊

I don’t have my license quite yet and our public transit kinda sucks so I’m reliant on this thing to get around a lot of the time, I still definitely plan on continuing to use it once I have my license though

There’s a grocery store nearby that I can get to in less than 10 minutes on this thing on a mixed-use “shared sidewalk” and I love doing it even though I can’t carry all that much (I could use another bag, and I should probably strap a milk crate on sometime)

  • Hobby subs mainly, but also that the Linux subs are somehow significantly better than the ones on Lemmy, at least some people on there know what they’re talking about and aren’t just circlejerking about the usual things lmao

I find that the Lemmy community (outside of here and Hexbear of course) is usually not better than reddit, in fact it’s often worse, a lot of the people who moved over are the most reddit logo-brained people around lol

  • If you think that advocating for the destruction of a genocidal state is the same thing as murdering all of the people within, you’re truly clueless lmao

Do you think that the Allies just wiped out all of the people in Germany after defeating the Nazis? Or that white people in South Africa were genocided after the apartheid government fell?

Wanting a state to “disappear” (as in for it to fall and be replaced by a better one) is a completely different thing from wanting its people to “disappear” (as in killing them all) and your smugness is so hilarious when you don’t even understand the difference between those lmao

  • I appreciate this comment, I’ve heard it’s gotten a bit better over the past year or so too because they have new body scanners apparently, thank you for the reassurance

Still not entirely sure if I can make myself do it, the consequences of the potential worst case scenario are so absolutely horrible that I have to be absolutely certain it’s not going to happen in order for me to be willing to take the risk, I probably wouldn’t be able to handle even the most basic patdown if the scanners decide to flag me, let alone if a TSA agent decides to be an abuser that day

I really wish though that this pointless security theater organization would be abolished already so that merely travelling internationally wasn’t so much to worry about
