Americans are confident that the missiles won’t actually hit their ships, they will only explode in the water next to the ship, which is what they tested 1 or 2 years ago and then proclaimed their carrier fleet unsinkable.

The lib armchair general explanation is that an aircraft carrier is moving, and can perform evasive maneuvers. The missile coming down will have a very hot nose, which interferes with guidance, meaning that even a minor course adjustment from the target will result in a miss.

What they miss (possibly for CHINA BAD reasons) is that it is not an insurmountable problem.

You could dump a bunch of compressed air and refrigerants out the nose of your rocket, cooling the nose and reducing friction.

You could have a shielded section of the missile communicate with a secondary guidance module (say, on another missile, a plane, a satellite, whatever).

You could use multiple sensors and a decent computer to cut through the noise caused by the hot nose. Carrier groups are going to be the loudest things in the area on the EM spectrum. They kinda have to be, the radar that they use to detect an incoming missile to perform evasive maneuvers in the first place rely on it.

I have to assume that people actually working in these analyst and engineer jobs are at least vaguely aware of this, but talking heads for propaganda networks are paid not to.
