I’m not sure OSM would feature bases either. They don’t have their own satellite images, as far as I know.

If i remember well OSM also censors military installations but only in the displayed layers ; it’s still in the DB but as a browser you don’t realize it. For example if you browse OSM from osm.org you will see the DGSI (french secret services) headquarters on Boulevard Mortier in Paris are just highlighted in red, but if you browse from openstreetmap.fr (different layer configuration) it’s all striped and you don’t see any buildings.

I understand that OSM is a small non-profit and really benefits from public maps so doesn’t want to upset governments too much, but still… publish everything :)

For people interested in stuff you’re not supposed to see there’s often drops of maps and pictures on cryptome.org (no actual releases there but some compilation of stuff found here and there)

          holly shit, balls of steel

Cryptome welcomes documents for publication that are prohibited by governments worldwide, in particular material on freedom of expression, privacy, cryptology, dual-use technologies, national security, intelligence, and secret governance – open, secret and classified documents – but not limited to those. Documents are removed from this site only by order served directly by a US court having jurisdiction. No court order has ever been served; any order served will be published here – or elsewhere if gagged by order. Bluffs will be published if comical but otherwise ignored.

Uh? As far as I know, Google had the deal of blurring military places everywhere. And that article made it seem as it was only Russia that got “decensored” (this time).
