My Maranta leuconora is shooting out air roots like crazy.
I already looked if others use moss poles for them, but I couldn’t find anyone using moss poles for this plant.
My experience tells me, that it might benefit from one. Would you agree?
I haven’t used a moss pole yet, do you have any tips?
I grow this plant in semi hydro (mineralic substrate/ LECA), and I don’t want to have something organic, like wood or sphagnum moss, near it.
Do you have any alternatives, that fit the same use but don’t utilise organic substrates?
I don’t think a moss pole would work for these, but you can cut it right below the node and throw those roots right into the same pot to grow a fuller plant. You only need one node and one leaf to make a successful cutting. You can grow cuttings in water, too
Hahaha, no thanks 😁 I already have too many of those. The Maranta spreads in my house like weeds.
But yeah, you’re right! What works even better imo is to stick it into LECA instead of water, which keeps everything moist and aerated, and prevents rotting issues
I’ve got a few of these and never attempted a trellis or moss pole, just letting them trail seems fine. I think they are ground crawling plants rather than climbers. I’m sure you could use a pole, but a basic trellis with really large gaps would probably work better if you want height from the plant. That would probably give you more options for the material challenges you have mentioned too.
