“With Ukraine’s own much-hyped counteroffensive so far failing to breach Russia’s sophisticated defenses on the southern front, the destruction of Russia’s offensive potential on the Avdiivka front will at least reduce the possibility of any major Russian breakthroughs during the coming winter months,” the Atlantic Council think tank’s Olivia Yanchik wrote this week.

Russian offensive gains are equivalent to Ukrainian offensive failures. Their success is actually their defeat. A Russian victory in Avdiivia is just as catastrophic as what Ukraine experienced over the summer. The Atlantic Council is to be taken very very seriously on this matter.

Olivia Yanchik is a program assistant with the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center. Yanchik was previously a temporary project assistant with the National Democratic Institute. She also held internships with US Senator Elizabeth Warren, the University of Chicago Cyber Policy Initiative, the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, and Cambridge Global Advisors. Yanchik received an MSc in conflict studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She graduated magna cum laude with honors from Mount Holyoke College with a BA in political science and a minor in law, public policy, and human rights.

    About the summer offensive

Ukraine’s expanding fleet of modern battle tanks have so far been sparingly deployed. According to reports in late August, Ukraine had lost just five of its 71 Leopard 2 tanks in the thirteen weeks since the start of the country’s long-anticipated counteroffensive. Ukrainian commanders are clearly waiting for the right moment to use their enhanced tank force. While Russia’s well-prepared defensive positions in southern Ukraine represent a formidable obstacle, the flat and open terrain of the region is potentially ideal for tanks if Ukrainian forces are able to break through the Russian lines.

The human wave tactics on display in eastern Ukraine reflect Russia’s narrowing military options following a year of embarrassing battlefield setbacks. The Russian military entered the current war with a reputation as the world’s number two army, but has performed remarkably poorly in Ukraine. With many of his most experienced units and elite regiments decimated, Putin now hopes to grind down Ukraine’s resources and outlast the country’s Western backers by relying on superior numbers. In the final months of 2022, he bolstered his invasion force with an additional 300,000 troops via Russia’s first mobilization since World War II.
