Dimitris Dermentzoglou, PhD student in Coastal Engineering, is investigating whether salt marshes can serve as a natural solution for coastal protection. It is why he mimics salt marsh vegetation at the TU Delft Waterlab. He hopes his research will yield a more sustainable alternative to the repeated raising of dikes.
Haven’t some places been planting seagrass for the same reason, to protect beaches from erosion and reduce waves? Why is he building 50k grass blades by hand?
Yes, seagrass is a great barrier! It’s a common tactic. He is using them to simulate real grass and take measurements.
I mean, I’d expect planting real grass to be a lot easier than building 50k rubber grass blades by hand shrug
Haha, yes, this is a model simulation. :)
