As a history graduate myself, I can tell you that he has absolutely looked forward, and extrapolated where this timeline is likely to go, based not only on past historical examples, but also considering the models that the contemporary players are using, which is clearly a combination of the Nazi playbook, extreme Libertarian fantasy, Russian ambition, and oligarchic greed .
Way back in the late 80s, I started listening to Rush Limbaugh, whose radical propaganda I was able to resist because I had a good grounding in Critical Thinking. But as I heard his listeners fawn over him, and saw the conservative talk radio trend quickly spread across America following the end of the Fairness Doctine in 1987, I realized that if this level of conservative rhetoric and propaganda continued for long enough, it could literally destroy America, and then the world.
Then I watched in horror as it caught fire in the 90s with Newt Gingrich fanning the flames, then the stolen election of 2000, with the Dems just saying “Oh, well,” in response, then the rise and election of HitlerPig.
EVERY single prediction I made in my most extreme imagination in 1987 has come true so far, and if we dont do something to stop it, we will come to resemble Nazi Germany, with death camps and everything. Except this time, nobody will come to the rescue, and the entire planet will turn into an authoriarian kleptocracy, operated by Sociopathic Oligarchs.
My next prediction: MAGA can’t lose the slim majorities in both Houses, or control of investigatory committees will fall into the hands of Democrats, as well as legislative control. Protests will continue to grow around the nation, driven by citizen anger over multiple issues. By next summer the protests will be huge, and HitlerPig will encourage his RedHats to instigate violence. They heeded his call before, and he pardoned them, and made them political martyrs within their cause. They will respond again.
Now he can call the protests violent, and send in the authorities to quell the violence with more extreme violence. That will allow him to declare Martial Law and suspend the upcoming elections until peace is restored, and since he controls the peace, that will never happen. Any further demonstrations will be met with deadly violence, and any organizers will be disappeared to the 30,000 person facility currently being built in Guantanamo, outside of the view of the media or the toothless courts.

There are two sides to the brain drain. First are the researchers into things the government doesn’t like, who will leave if they have the means to.
But the second is that with all of our hostility to foreign nationals right now, even the ones who come from countries the government likes will think twice about applying for positions here.

The good news for our side is that they are giving their opposition the gift of competence. The most experienced, competent leaders are being replaced with stupid, ignorant, totally inexperienced loyalists. Left behind are millions of angry Federal employees, who hate what MAGA is doing to all their years of hard work, and who despise their new bosses. They are ripe for recruiting as moles, leakers, saboteurs, assassins, etc. And those experienced leaders will be the ones to lead us through the inevitable revolt, and form the basis of the new Democractic government.
Ultimately, MAGA will be brought down by their own virtuosic incompetence.

I grew up in the midwest. For a long time I considered myself a conservative, I think I partly still do.
But I consider myself a McCain conservative, I think Bush I did an incredible job, he helped dismantle the cold war MIC, put eastern Europe back together with basically 0 blood, and the 90s were the golden age for America. Clinton did good too.
The problem is, in our success, we let the worst plagues of Pandora out of the box.
After the midwest my family moved to the south, and it was a caricature. Patriotism, Christianity, these weren’t virtues to live by, these were proof that you were superior to everyone else.
I’m brown, and even though I was born here, it was always clear I was and could never be “A Real American” like them.
But the way they treated black people was really the worst, they even joked about it to me like I’d find it funny.
They don’t understand the concept of democracy, it goes against their religion where they are the chosen people and everyone else is evil for denying that.
It’s a legacy of the confederacy, after the war we kept the slavers out of power for 10 years, then made a deal to let them back in exchange for Van Buren, and they’ve basically recreated their shadow confederacy under the name Jim Crow ever since. Hitler explicitly wrote about how they were the model Germany must follow in Mein Kampf, and the Nuremberg laws are just Jim Crow without the 1-drop rule (Germans weren’t racist enough for that).
We were able to ignore them as long as we have because they had no voice and their damage was contained in the South, but social media made them a pestilence that can be directed to any target, and they are so impossibly ignorant and proud (and proud of their ignorance) that you don’t need AI algorithms to send them to destroy democracy, they basically follow pro wrestling rules.

I can understand the tensions from the housing crisis, and I can also sympathise with not having a lot of personal sympathy for the Americans moving right now, who most likely won’t be refugees as such, but just people with the financial privilege and ability to choose where to emigrate.
But long-term, depending on how shitty the shit-show will get, there might be tent cities for persecuted Americans in the future, both for you and for us here in the EU (and, ironically, in Mexico, of course). You can say that you don’t like it, and you have every right to - but at least in my eyes, it’s an international duty to human rights when that point comes, and I, personally, won’t give a shit what people feel, then. The international community will have to take them in unless we want to follow the international trend of fascism and say “empathy is the problem” like Elon. (Even though I actually don’t think this would be about empathy, it’d be about upholding what remains of international standards, duties, laws and human rights, eventually with force if necessary)

Much of canadian resentment comes from the wearing away of our differences by sheer bulk of exposure exacerbated by the typical lack of awareness by colonizers of their own personal role in this damaging process and its effects, interpersonally.
Colonizers often deny their association with the process.
Oh maybe some visitors or US migrants understand intellectually. But culture is not very conscious behaviour, and the heroic individualism and assumptions of cultural supremacy that they bring will rankle most Canadians at some point.

Admittedly, I dislike the very region of the US I live in and think the culture here is a combination of intellectually vacuous, sexually puritanical/traditionalist, and generally boring nonsense. I view the individuals who attach themselves to my local culture as kind of pathetic. My feelings towards them somewhat mirror Emil Cioran’s negative view of his own countrymen. I have no desire to spread this culture, I’d like to escape it: I’m functionally culture-less as one can be.

I know whenever I meet new people from a different country, the first thing we talk about is how they feel about the different political parties in their country, and they always feel super strongly positively about their government. If there’s one thing Americans traveling abroad just won’t shut up about, it is their good feelings about the American Democratic Party.
When we traveled out of the country for the 1st admin, we got treated with suspicion until we said truthfully we voted for the Democratic Party options.
To be clear: People were great until they (usually) guessed we were Canadian, then we’d get side-eye when they found out we weren’t.
The difference in land border crossing experience into Canada got more overall hostile the further into 2018-19.
We haven’t traveled like that since Covid. But I imagine voicing your distaste for fascism is required in polite circles now. Saying you voted Kamala and for the Dems is a good short-hand, even if you recognize they aren’t anywhere close to Perfect-Good.

What the commenter was saying was a little bit different though. They said they, as a Canadian, were upset with the heinous nature of the Democratic party, and then they were sick of obnoxious Americans coming to their town and trying to defend the Democrats. And, also, there’s a housing crisis, and immigrants are making it worse.
If they’d said what you said, I would have been far less suspicious about what they were saying. They did switch after the fact to saying that they were sick of Americans who were using being Democrats as a shield against criticism of their country, which again makes good sense to me.

I thought about mounting a disagreement with the believability of this. Not about the obnoxious Americans – that I can wholeheartedly believe – but about your primary complaint being that the Democrats “have done some heinous shit” and then Americans come up to your town and what they want to talk about is defending Democrats. That is weird and makes no sense (not to mention the super smooth way of bringing up the housing crisis and blaming it on immigrants, I guess?).
