Coming from the country that boycots China for alleged human rights violations, but has no problem going to a country with thousands of worker deaths. Gas is an important reason according to the government.

Free and democratic country.

Some people are already practicing their athleticism before the tournament has started by saying they just HAVE to go because of Russia.

Somehow even this is the fault of Putin.

The World Cup being in Qatar really is a joke, and countries’ response to it is even more laughable. It was announced what like nearly 10 years ago and only now once its too late are countries objecting.

Not to mention the whole putting the tournament in the winter thing. I suppose many non-euro leagues are used to being interrupted for the WC so I shouldn’t complain, but if this derails Arsenal’s season I’m gonna be mad.

Then again the next WC is in the USA, if they can put it there I suppose it can go anywhere.

That’s an interesting point: I wonder if there’s room for some agitprop, here.

Like, surely the UK, France, anywhere else in Europe is responsible for more shit than Qatar. Albeit not so directly related to the WC and building stadiums, etc.

But if the football crowd is going to make an ethical stand, they could be encouraged to chant, ‘no more sweatshops’, (I assume this is a problem, although I do not follow football).

I think the vast majority of football supporters couldn’t give less of a shit about the politics behind it. All the talk of money and corruption in the game is very much a twitter/reddit thing. People’s eyes glaze over if the topic comes up in the pub or the grounds in my experience

yeah the whole response everywhere has been all fluff and no substance. international football really has no master except money. i stopped “engaging” with “fans” a long time ago because it is very negative experience as whole. but the only tangible action taken so far is by italy who have decided to not participate in the world cup (by not qualifying).

Speaking of Arsenal, going to Eindhoven by chance? Would be cool to have a fellow tankie in the stands lmao. Although I hope PSV wins, of course.

Haha I wish, sadly I live all the way over in Canada. Hoping to make it over to the Emirates at some point this season at least. That’s fair, it should be a really good matchup, I’m a bit worried not gonna lie. I’ve always had a soft spot for PSV in the Dutch league tho so hopefully they can go far in the knockouts.

I don’t mind in the winter. I like various countries getting it but Qatar bribed their way in.

However western countries complain when brown and black people get sporting events. Brazil became the worst country ever once they hosted the WC/Olympics. Russia was considered inhumane.

Media never says a word about a western country’s conditions though.

the winter thing is no good. I do agree tho that it should be in different countries, but it should always be summer for me

I don’t really care about sportsball but I recently learned that Iran is in the same group as England and the USA so there will be at least two matches of some interest in this year’s slavery cup event.
