That does work, but until the shoot comes up you don’t have a good way to track the progress. Another way is to place the turmeric in a Ziploc bag surrounded wrapped with a moist paper towel or mixed with a bit of soil, and plant it once you can see the shoot and roots developing. I don’t remember what I did, but I think that for my current plant I just placed the turmeric root directly into the soil.
