I’m from Pittsburgh and I’ve never heard of this lol. I know we’ve retained a lot of Old English words (eg https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/creek#English). Wish this had more references.

This is pretty normal shorthand. Never heard about it being associated with Pittsburgh. I guess “zipper needs replacing” might be a bit more common? (or at least sounds a bit more natural to my ears).
