The only thing I know about Lukashenko is whatever was in John Oliver’s piece on him; so absolutely nothing. If y’all can help me out on that I’d be grateful.

Anyway, just saw this on twitter and thought it was very sus.

Sviatlana is very suspect, she “declared” herself the leader of Belarus after she fled the country when she lost the election.

So she doesn’t even live there anymore??? If she really gave a shit you’d think she’d stay lol was she in fear of her life??

Also people in the replies are contradicting her tweet by saying Belarusians were welcoming the Russian army (they painted this as a bad thing) but then I remember that one guy from the John Oliver segment that said it fucking sucked to have the same leader that long? I’m confused as to how the population feels about Lukashenko, and Putin I guess. Western media claims they have rigged elections but I’m very sceptical of that.

I have no way of knowing if they have “rigged” elections or whatever (which is always rich coming from, say, Americans) but I do know that he won 80% of the vote in the election, so if it isn’t rigged he has an overwhelming amount of electoral support.

Edit: last I heard she was living in Lithuania, but that may not be the case anymore

I mean Doug Ford became premier again even though less than half the provincial population voted so…. Funny how some countries are rigged but others aren’t…

        • They don’t need to rig an election, he really have 80% of support consistently for years because he’s about as much based as it is possible to be for the capitalist state leader. It’s just that capitalist core and its periphery have no democracy whatsoever so we tend to view any elections above 40-45% with suspicion.

Opened comments to post this exact bit! Honestly this one specific meme is what tipped me over from flirting with being critically pro-Russian/Belarussian towards being like “yeah, okay” back in the beginning of this clusterf

I mean you can just google BBC Lukashenko interview. It’s the usual dishonest twisting of reality, poisoning the well, and “when did you stop beating your wife” type questions from the so-called “reporter” and he is having none of it. Then all the libs on Twitter tried to pretend like this interview was proof that he is some kind of unhinged maniacal dictator. Honestly i think more anti-imperialist leaders need to be speaking like this to the scum from the imperialist propaganda networks. Putin and Xi are always way too diplomatic. Lukashenko reminds me of a slavic Ortega or maybe a Maduro (sadly not quite Chavez who literally called W. Bush the devil at the UN)…except sadly he’s not (or at least he doesn’t openly admit it though i think it’s fairly clear he at least has Soviet sympathies, more so than Putin) a socialist.

I would love to visit Belarus one day when it isn’t being threatened. Russia too (I plan on taking Russian when I do my masters). I would visit all the Soviet Union countries but most seemed to have been occupied by fascists.

IIRC definitely has “liberalized” significantly less than the ones NATO has on a leash, which of course is the economic cardinal sin to the West.

      • It’s capitalist but with a strong presence of the state which is not afraid (read: not controlled by international financiere) to regulate things away from neoliberalism.

I can’t wait to visit Belarus, I was in Russia a couple of times and while there is still a lot of Soviet aesthetics and of course Lenin Mausoleum, there is also a lot of conservative pushing from the government to remove many things related to communism and to put tsarist imagery everywhere. Meanwhile there is Lenin in front of government building in Minks and Soviet flag every now and then.

Western leaders and media spread lies about Belarus and Lukashenko because he hasn’t allowed Belarus to fall victim to neoliberal looting. The usual capitalist regime change organizations are constantly trying their tricks in Belarus, which the government makes very difficult and said organizations always call foul play on.

Lukashenko is honestly the best post-Soviet leader, not really much of a compliment considering the bar is literally just being better than Nazi apologists but he’s at least protected the country from the level of neoliberal looting the rest of them suffered. Not much, but at least it’s something.

All these liberals calling for a “democratic Belarus” don’t care about Belarussians at all and would go back to thinking they’re second-class Slavs again once they get their Western-friendly government in power

That’s a very interesting second paragraph. I sometimes get in discussion with friends and Belarus is seen as the “ugly duckling” of east Europe. Definitely some “how does he dare say that? He should shut up and let us tell him what to think”.

I mean, some of his opinions are shit. It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have power to effect change globally, and it’s their country. Belarusians should decide what happens in their country. It’s not for us to police what their politicians are saying under the guise of regime change.

Same reason to reprimand Sviatlana (among others). She’s asking for foreign intervention to help her win in Belarus.

It’s such a dirty aspect of the Liberal condition. They “cared deeply” about Libyans for about 6 months whilst it fit their agendas, they “stand with Iranians” until they get their puppet in power and they’re back to being filthy Muslims who ruin the country. The sooner we realise these people will never ever care for us, never actually “get it”, we can actually move forward. The white Western liberal does not and cannot understand just how dehumanising they can be when they treat us like pawns

The same Liberals who didn’t even know it existed. It’s weird how all the countries that are being labeled terrorist states and the biggest threat to the planet have literally done nothing even close. So far as I know, they’ve been dealing with their own shit. It’s NATO countries that are constantly invading and they were the ones who started this war. The lack of basic critical thinking is very worrying.

The rhetoric being spread on twitter is incredibly worrying. More and more people, those who would gasp in horror at the dehumanization of a specific group of people, are now doing the thing they claim to be against. So many bleeding heart Libs saying shit like this:

Was gonna share this as well. Interesting when Chinese communists are discussing Belarusian economics they refer to it as Market Socialist, although Belarus is never included in what western MLs consider AES. It’s very complicated and could be considered more liberal than China without the end goal being to move toward communism, but it’s certainly not neoliberal either, like the “freedom fighter” opposition wants it to be.

Very real question, Didn’t she just declare herself the ruler, What right does she have to 1) speak for the people of Belarus, who voted for Lukashenko, and 2) how can the person who just declared herself the ruler of a country without the will of the people, call anyone else, let alone the elected ruler a dictator?

Leader is better imo. Just too much negative connotation with “ruler”. Belarus isn’t some monarchy or something. It’s a modern capitalist economy with large state intervention. While it is capitalist, democracy is a spectrum, and Lukashenko definitely represents the people more than some puppet like Biden or Kamala Harris. He is like a socially conservative soc dem.
